Blu-Ray Gets Porn Titles

It seems that, contrary to Sony's stated aims for the nascent format, porn is indeed already available on Blu-ray discs. At least in Japan, the adult film studio “Glayz” already produces and distributes content on Blu-ray Disc, HD DVD and UMD.

This is contrary to previous industry reports and rumors that Sony might not allow any pornographic content on Blu-ray disc. So what is the significance of this?

Porn was a major force in the past format war
between BetaMax and VHS. In that battle of times past, VHS turned out to be the winner. BetaMax was the competing format, backed by Sony, which did not allow any pornographic content.

Many analysts believe that the VHS victory was largely due to the porn industry’s support for the VHS format. If porn is produced and distributed on both Blu-ray disc and HD DVD formats, it will help to level the playing field on this latest blue laser format war.

But Glayz is only one studio after all… Sony could still block and prevent US based porn companies from producing their content on Blu-ray disc and CES reports indicate that the adult film industry now prefers the HD DVD format.

Nevertheless, this is interesting news and it sheds light on the possibility that Blu-ray Disc might have porn content appearing on their format after all.
