Samsung Puts Internet On TVs

Samsung will announce at the IFA in Germany it's partnership with Yahoo to provide a new integrated internet access service in its TVs.

This service will be named the Widget Channel and will be powered by Yahoo Widget Engine, allowing couch potatoes to enjoy small internet applications designed to enhance the traditional TV experience.

The service will provide news, finance and weather information via the remote control.

Developers will also be able to use JAVASCRIPT, XML, HTML and Adobe Flash technology to write TV applications for the platform through the Widget Channel, expanding the compatibility and power of PC application developer programs to TV and related CE devices.

For once it seems the European's aren't getting shafted on this one, joining Canada, Australia and Singapore by the end of this year on Samsung's Series 7, 8 and 9 TVs.

For years Samsung has sat back and watched others fail to achieve this miracle, not due to technological problems however, but because we slobs couldn't part with traditional viewing, but the company now believes we're ready for change.

The content will be accessible via an integrated Ethernet port or a Samsung wireless LAN adapter, connecting the viewer through their broadband service.

The head of the digital media division at Samsung Electronics, Dr. Park said, "We want televisions to be centre of the home network."

Persistent Park has looked into his crystal ball and recons that in around five years TVs will be connected wirelessly to a range of devices which will download applications such as pictures, video streaming, games and music – we'll see.
